ILIP PRESENTS LIFE+, THE GROUNDBREAKING PACKAGING SYSTEM DEVELOPED TO REDUCE FOOD WASTE, AT FRUIT LOGISTICA

Active pads, laser-perforated film and advanced heat sealable punnets: in Hall 3.1, Stand D-07 ILIP will be introducing the system designed to improve the shelf life of fresh produce. The test results will be presented on February 9th in Berlin, during the Tech Stage event

BERLIN (30 January 2017) Packaging takes a new turn at Fruit Logistica with ILIP: from 8 to 10 February, in Hall 3.1, Stand D-07, the company will present Life+, the new packaging system for fruit. Thanks to cutting-edge technologies, like ILIP’s innovative heat sealable punnets, combined with active pads and dedicated laser-perforated films, the Life+ system allows for the products’ freshness, weight and organoleptic properties to be maintained for longer.

The results will be presented by Luigi Garavaglia, ILIP R&D manager, on Thursday 9 February at 1 p.m. during the Tech Stage event, the Fruit Logistica platform dedicated to technological innovation (Hall 8.1, Stand B-22).

In addition to marking a turning point for the fresh produce packaging sector, Life+ also represents a paradigm shift for ILIP itself, which, has gone from being a packaging supplier to a real partner in the development of innovative solutions in collaboration with its customers.

“Thanks to Life+”, explains Roberto Zanichelli, ILIP’s Sales and Marketing Director, “we now offer a one-stop-shop solution, a brand new packaging concept which is capable of meeting the requirements of our three point of reference: the customer, the Corporate Social and Environmental responsibility, and the consumer.

In fact, Life+ makes it possible to: significantly extend the fresh produce shelf life and improve our customers’ competitiveness; reduce food waste, which is a problem of both an ethical and environmental nature; maintain the the taste and texture of the products and improve food safety for the consumer. Our aim is not only to supply a product, but also to establish a real partnership with our customers, with the aim of jointly developing solutions that will give added value to the product.”

The new system is based on the EMAP concept (Equilibrium Modified Atmosphere Packaging), and ensure a a specific gas mix inside the packaging thanks to the synergistic effect of three different elements: an active pad, an unvented punnet and a heat-sealed laser-perforated film.

The Life+ system features two types of absorbent pad, both of which have been realized in partnership with Sirane Group: the ANTB (anti-microbial) active absorbent pad which inhibits mould and fungal growth, while the alternative ETHA active absorbent pad is capable of absorbing ethylene thus slowing the ripening process of the packaged fruit.

The punnets range produced by ILIP have moved beyond the traditional perforations: in fact, these airtight trays are designed to prevent air from entering and nullifying the effect of the active pads and change the specific EMAP. The punnets are subjected to a special antifog treatment in order to prevent fogging, thus giving greater visibility to the packaged product.

The packaging is closed with a heat-sealed film developed in partnership with Plastopil. This film has microscopic laser perforations designed to ensure a specific gas exchange, while at the same time ensuring the natural metabolism of the fruit itself, in order to avoid triggering fermentation.

Life+ has already been shown to significantly extend the shelf life and freshness of fruits like berries, strawberries, cherry tomatoes and grapes. In addition to offering practical and economic advantages for the entire supply chain, this innovative system is also consistent with the ILIP’s commitment to support Save Food initiative, which was launched by FAO and Messe Düsseldorf in order to fight food waste.
